This event is geared to answer all those questions that the newcomer does not even know to ask. This full featured event will include Equestrians showcasing they're talents and skills. Expertise in the marshaled arts will include: heavy fighters, light fighters (Rapier), youth combat, and archery. Classes in Arts and Sciences will also be scheduled through out the day.
Display of Heraldry shall be encouraged, so bring out your seldom used banners. So come forth one and all, enjoy our hospitality while we reveal the mysteries of the SCA to those new to the society. For those veterans out there who wish give guidance and instruction, we most welcome your skills and time.
The Shire of Sylvan Glen is holding its annual event - the Defenders of Sylvan Glen July 6-8.
There will be heavy fighting! There will be rapier duels (a "pearls and swine" if enough brave souls enter)! There will be youth fighting! There will be thrown weapons of all sorts! There will be an archery contest (if I can find someone willing to be the archery Marshall)! All martial activities are "tourney" style (up to each marshall to devise what kind of tourney he would like to Marshall, within the combat rules of AEthelmearc), with pick-up fights after the tourney. There will be prizes galore - including $10.00 gas cards to each winner in the above categories. Not to mention, the winning heavy fighter, rapier contestant, and each youth fighter will receive commerative wooden long swords. The Thrown weapons winner receives a ceremonial knife. Archery prize to be determined when I have an archery Marshall. ***A&S*** = In order to encourage more A&S projects, we are offering a $35.00 SCA gift certificate (good for a 1 year membership), to the winner of our A&S competition. The theme is - Medieval Monsters, and Bestiary Beasts. All youth A&S participants will receive a token of participation. AND classes - right now we only have one fine offering - a basketry class, material cost $5.00, taught by the renown Beth of Sylvan Glen. Last year we offered an entire tract of scribal activities, so be looking for scribal arts to be featured at this event. For the entertainment of our youth, we offer a periodish fishing kit (a stick, a string, a hook, and some worms). To be used with parental supervision only! There is a fishing pond at the site. In WV, all fisher persons under the age of 15, may fish without a license. If I can find a fishing marshall, we will organize a period fishing derby (I have permission). WV offers a one day fishing license., which can purchased on line for $15.00, or stop in at the Martinsburg Wal-Mart on your way to the event. A fine feast is in the final stages of planning by our own Joy of Sylvan Glen. Finally, come watch the hounds run, as a demo of coursing will be held (and a real competition held if enough dog people attend).
