It's autumn of 1096 and we're in Constantinople, the capital of a mighty empire that considers itself the successor to Rome as the center of learning and culture. As the western endpoint of the Silk Road and other caravan routes, and a major seaport, it's also a major crossroads for commerce.

The year is 146O. It has been a good year and the shire harvest has been bountiful. But danger threatens. The Act of Accord has been passed by parliament naming Edward, Duke of York as the rightful heir to the thrown. Queen Margaret is marching south with her Scottish recruits determined to protect her son's interests. Her hungry army has been promised unlimited plunder and the Shire residents face starvation. Who will Protect them? Who will Defend them? The townspeople offer a great prize to the champions who step forward!

Janet Arnold’s pioneering research into the cut and construction of clothes from the sixteenth to the early twentieth centuries provide invaluable information on clothing from the past. Her series of publications entitled Patterns of Fashion continues to make a profound impact in many fields, from the re-creation of historic dance and other forms of re-enactment to designs for stage, film and television. For art historians and conservators too, her insights have proved an indispensable aid to historical research.

Southern Crusades just wouldn't be the same without special events. We all look forward to such things as Torchlight Tourneys, the Bardic Competition, and the Dance and Drum Competition to entertain us, test our mettle, and bring us together with our friends at War. Also, as the war grows bigger, there is a need for exciting new events; perhaps Period Demonstrations or daytime performances on Merchant's row. If you are interested in hosting or running an event at Southern Crusades, please contact Lady Perin ( tyseneschal@gmail.com) so that we can help make that happen!
