The hoard was discovered by David and Andrew Whelan with a metal detector who, upon realizing the importance of their find, contacted experts from Portable Antiquities Scheme Finds. The treasure including 617 coins, a gold arm ring and other objects from as far away as Afghanistan, Scandinavia and Russia. Since the hoard has been declared treasure by the authorities, the Whelans will be paid a fair market value for their discovery.
