A short article by Helen Castor for The Guardian looks at whether the relationship between Richard the Lionheart and King Philip II of France in the 12th century was diplomatic or physical.
Historians report that, during negotiations between the two men, Richard and Philip shared a bed, but according to Lionheart expert John Gillingham, the act may have been one of diplomacy rather than ardor. |
