On October 2, during his second voyage to North America, Jacques Cartier came to a town which he renamed "Montreal."

Cartier was born in St. Malo, Brittany, to a respectable seafaring family. He was over 40 when he undertook his first voyage of exploration. In Canada, he is regarded as a national founder.
