Charles Martel's forces won the Battle of Tours fought on October 10, 732. Gibbon and other traditional historians credit his victory with saving Christian Europe from Muslim domination.
It was the age of the Caliphate, with Muslim power stretching from Kabul in the east to Lisbon in the west. Arab advance forces expected no serious resistance from the Frankish tribes. However, Martel was able to assemble a well-prepared force to meet the invasion. His well-trained and disciplined infantry withstood the attacks of the opposing cavalry. » 1111 reads
