"Gates of Paradise" to Tour USA

Lorenzo Ghiberti's immense gilded doors, completed in 1452 and nicknamed the "Gates of Paradise," will tour the United States beginning in April 2007. The intricately decorated doors are 20 feet high and weigh three tons.
Ghiberti worked for 27 years making the doors for the Baptistery in Florence's Piazza del Duomo. Ten panels in high and low relief illustrate scenes from the Old Testament. It was Michelangelo who gave the doors their sobriquet, saying they were fine enough to hang at the entrance to paradise. Replica doors currently hang in their place in Florence. |
