Modern Belgians live medieval lives

Ivonne Janssens and Daniel Grandjean are modern people who live parttime in a medieval world. The Belgian husband and wife have convinced the city fathers of Aarschot to allow them to inhabit the 700-year-old Sint-Rochus tower as a 14th century duchess and her mercenary husband.
The couple are just two of a number of people in the country who have chosen to trade in their everyday clothes for medieval garb in order to re-enact their country's past. Janssens heads a group called the Order of the Hagelanders, only one of a number of groups that have been created recently. She says, "We have doctors and lawyers, people from all walks of life. It has become a national passion." |
