Palace of the Gauls shows surprising sophistication

Contrary to popular belief, the Gauls during the time of Julius Caesar may not have been the rough barbarians as depicted in the Asterix books but a civilized society whose leaders lived in palaces.
A recent dig near Lyon, France has unearthed the remains of what archaeologists believe is the palace of Vercingetorix, the last military leader of Gaul, including "elaborate foundations and tiled roofing which together suggest that the architecture in Gaul was just as advanced as that in Rome around 80 to 70 [BCE]." |
