All of us are deeply shocked at the sudden, fatal collapse of Baron Gundric Fawkes, Sergeant of the Red Company, companion of the Order of the Dragon's Heart.
Gundric collapsed after finishing a sparring match during Tuesday night's Metro Detroit fighting practice. Observers saw him go to the side as though to remove his armor to take a break after sparring. Partially disarmed, he then collapsed and quickly stopped breathing. CPR was immediately rendered, paramedics arrived within a few short minutes and took over and Gundric was transported less than two miles to St. John Oakland Hospital, but he was apparently beyond anybody's ability to bring him back. No medical cause has been officially determined yet, though hospital staff indicated to the family that a massive heart attack was suspected.
We share in the grief of Baroness Vannora at this loss, and all of us mourn the passing of a very good man whose dedication to service and whose loyalty made him an outstanding friend. Funeral and visitation details are not yet available, but will be posted as soon as possible.
Baron Sir Garagchan and Baroness Mistress Catherine Aimee

I am still trying to process this information as well, well trying to understand it at least. I have always thought of those who where on this Ubelted Champions team as being somewhat inmortal, indestructable, and ever lasting. In a society where mock death is constantly looming, the reality of actual death is somewhat unreal. Baron Gundric will always be known throughout time as a champion of this kingdom, a leader of men. But most inportantly as a man who had unshakeable values, unbreakeable will ,and everlasting love. He will be sorely missed. And even though this team and this kingdom has suffered a tremendous loss, my heart goes out to his family who has lost the most of all.God speed to you brother and may we all find ourselves worthy enough to join you on the other side and take the field with you once more

I can only say, I will always love this man. He was a brother, friend and always made me smile. I seldom shed a tear for anything/anyone. For Rob though, I cried. Godspeed Gundric!

Gundric was like a big brother to me. He was happy to see me return to the SCA and was a guiding hand to me this past year.
I have not lost one sibling...in this span of two days...I have lost two....He will be so very missed by so many..

To say I am shocked is a poverty of words. I first came to know His Excellency through my work as a herald, ad then came to know him as a warrior and friend who always greeted me warmly.
I do not recall that I ever saw him without a smile on his face. It was impossible to be in a bad mood around him. Last time I saw him we were yukking it up over a poor, hapless, eastern unit getting overrun in a brutal way at Pennsic.
In case I haven't said it to any of you, I love you all as brothers, sisters, and friends. I wish I'd said it to Gundric last I saw him.

I can not express my sadness at the news of Gundric's passing. My first memories of the SCA were attending Roaring Wastes meetings at Cana. Gundric made me feel welcome and shortly had me working on various endevors in the group.
This begain a long friendship that sadly I had let lapse over the past few years. I regret not staying in touch with my friend...
My heart goes out to Lady Vannora in this terrible time.
To my Brothers and Sisters in House Darkyard - All my love and sympathy in this most sad occasion.

This has left me in total shock. I had the pleasure of spending time with him at Procrastinator as he was my first opponent in the faux pas tourney. Gundric has been a very dear friend for most opf my SCA time as well as very dear to my wife Megan. Our sympathies and love go out to his Lady Vannora and to all who felt this same love and bond with this truely exceptional man. You will be missed Brother

Gundric was one of the first people that I meet when I came into the SCA, he made feel as if I was he friend right off. Over the years he and I indeed become great friends and household brothers. I will miss him more then I can put into words. He was a good and gental man who eran the repect and love of those who knew him. My thoughts go out to his Lady and family at their time of loss. Goodbye My Friend, I know Forgan will be there to welcome you home

Since I've been involved in the SCA, I cannot remember a time when I didn't know Gundric. He was among the first of those outside of my local area to become my friend. He has since become my brother, in arms and otherwise. He never had an ill thing to say about anyone, and gave of himself freely and joyously. St. Michael now has a true Angel Serjant to lead the Holy Host against the evils of the world.

Shocked, speechless - beyond sad. My memories of Gundric predate his days in SCA, although we had many fine times together in SCA as well.
My heart is heavy. My thoughts are with his parents, his brother & his sisters, and of course his wife. I'm so happy he found you, Vannora, as his continued happiness was very important to me. I'm also glad to see so many warm comments from his friends in the society.
Rob has always had a special place in my heart & in my life - it is far too soon for a man of such goodness to leave this earth.

I, too, first met Gundric in pre-SCA days...24 years ago.... We joined the SCA the same night, along with Hrafnhildr. We had such good times, going to events with our little "household", learning so many new things. Even then, Rob was gallant and gracious, always ready to lend a hand, or give a smile.
While I am deeply saddened at his passing, it makes me smile through the tears to hear how many people were touched by his kindness.
I know I'll see many old SCA friends in the next several days, and I hope we have time to raise a glass and drink to Gundric's memory.

I've battled shyness my entire life, and Baron Gundric was one person who could very quickly help me feel a sense of welcome at any event, wherever I was. His infectious smile, laughter and enthusiasm could break through even the worst shy attacks that I could have. We both shared a love of good scotch, of the fun of Pennsic and other things, and I could not help but smile whenever I was around him. He'd always have me laughing in no time and feeling a whole lot less shy at events.
I am beyond words to express my shock and sorrow at the passing of such a fine friend. The hole he leaves behind is unfillable, and that is the true definition of a Peer. Although unrecognised as one, Baron Gundric to me defined the very qualities of what it means to be a Peer of our Realm. I just wish I could be half the person he was. He will be very sorely missed by so many who had the chance to call him "friend".
My deepest sympathy to Baroness Vanora and to Gundric's family. I know that doesn't sound like much, and I just wish there was more I could do than to express my sorrow and sympathy, but know that Gundric affected a lot of people in his relatively short life. We are the richer for his having been among us, and the poorer for his having left us prematurely.

Gundric was to me the example of Chivalry. He was always there when he was needed without being asked. He was a dear friend if you knew him or not. At my first fight practice he was making jokes with me as if I had known him all my life and made me feel as if I had come home. I have worked with Gundric training the Legion for many years and he was a superb commander even with his soft voice. People just respected and loved him and would follow his lead because they knew he would not steer them wrong. I can not remember a time when he was not happy and smiling. This Man was my Brother, my Friend and my Guide. He made me see what it was to be a Noble Man. I will remember Gundric as all of those things. I was lucky to have had such a person in my life and I will treasure every moment I had with him. Valhalla is a better place now.

All I keep picturing is watching the Unbelts warming up before the battle at War this past summer. I was just in awe watching how hard Gundric and Balthasar were hitting each other... and even though you could not see his face for his helm, I knew Gundric had that huge grin on his face...
Your warmth and your smile will be missed by all my friend. We will never forget your calm enthusiasm for life and for the things that matter most.

This is a small piece to add, but I'll add it...
To anybody here that didn't know him, that is reading these heartfelt words about this man we've lost, I wanna make something clear.
When a person passes away, people tend to only talk about the good things, and they look past the parts of that person that were less than admirable. I've heard some really nice things said about some pretty remarkable A-holes at funerals.
THIS IS NOT THE CASE HERE.
This man was one of the finest I ever met. The worst thing I can think of that he ever did was turn in the reciepts from an event late. That's it! I tell you what, if we all make it to whatever judgement we believe in and the worst anyone can come up with is suspect bookkeeping timeliness, than we're all gonna be up for sainthood.
Gundric was a brother....a friend...an example.
He remains a high water mark for things like grace and courtesy that few even have the potential to reach.
Noble bearing without seeming.... See Rob Vozniak
