How do you teach a class for Pennsic University when you cannot physically come to Pennsic? YOU RECORD A PODCAST VERSION that gentles can listen to at Mystic Mail of course!

As promised, this podcast is a medieval aviculture class--Survey to Medieval Aviculture. This Pennsic 37 version focuses on the subject of parrot language and intelligence, comparative neurology with mammels and how it relates to flight, and just what a parakeet really is. At the end, I discuss what a toy is from a parrot's perspective (look for a future podcast specifically on toys and toy making).

Listeners: download the Survey to Medieval Parrots handout at http://www.biyasama.com as it is the text that is needed for the first part of this class. If you have problems with the download, please email Lady Biya at aisinbiya@gmail.com.

News and comment show. Part one of July, 2008 episode catches the Feathered Companions up on the events of 2008, including the change of the guild name to the Known World Aviculturists Guild and the death of Cuddles of the Royal Menagerie of Atenveldt.

Expect a second episode for Pennsic 37 that will be more directly aviculture-class focused and less aviculture news and comment.

The society for creative anachronism has been around for over 40 years. Traditional arts and sciences include heavy fighting, cooking, spinning, weaving, costuming, dancing, and music. Why then should aviculture be studied in the SCA? In this podcast we'll examine how parrots have been a part of the SCA for many years. We'll introduce the history of parrots and spotlight two famous medieval monarchs who kept parrots: Frederick II, the holy roman emperor who wrote the book on falconry, and Henry VIII of England.
