10-1 they'll discover a trove of Tennant's lager cans.

Maybe find the REAL wee magic stane (as opposed to the septic tank lid currently on display at Edinburgh Castle).
BTW me and the wife did the tourist thing in Westminster Abbey last week - and we had a wee chuckle at the sight of the Coronation Chair minus above stane. Well done Michael Forsyth !

#2. The real stone is nowhere near Scone. Nor is it in Edinburgh Castle and it was NEVER under the English coronation chair.

S0till, it will be interesting to see if anything turns up on this new dig!

Is 11 days really long enough to do a good archaeological dig?

Guthrie No 4 - Not a shovel in sight. It's being undertaken with radar technology.

Should be interesting, I'm keen to hear the results, please update us Scotsman !

#3 Boy Wonder

Where DO you get your facts?

The Stone of Scone WAS under the Coronation Chair - aka St. Edward's Chair - for ages and was even stolen once by Scots nationalists.

It was transferred from Westminster Abbey with great ceremony to its rightful place in Scotland about a decade or so ago.

Are we talking of the same "Stone of Scone" or something in your imagination?.

8

Super Mario Tram,

05/07/2007 10:15:18

Nobody know for sure Timothy. What is now in Edinburgh castle (and was in Westminster Cathedral) is a huge lump of sandstone which geologically came from scotland. If ANY of the myth surrounding "the stone" is taken as fact (jacobs pillow etc) then it would be unlikely to be a block of sandstone (which DOES resemble a medieaval cesspit cover) from scotland.

GO have a look , your google works as well as mine.

Masque,

#7. Boy Wonder is correct.

The real "Stone of Scone", the "Stone of Destiny", "Jacob's Pillow" or "Lia Fail" as it is variously known, was a treasure that could not be allowed to fall into the hands of Edward Longshanks. It was removed before his forces arrive.

How do we know this?

The fake stone in Edinburgh Castle (allegedly the same one as got nicked briefly from the Abbey in the 50s) is nowhere near the given historical description of the REAL Stone.

As said in this paper comment section recently, the Real Stone was brought from Egypt by Celtic mercenaries and had heiroglyphs carved on it.

Do keep up, Charlie.

Feel pain no more Jennifer. It's NOT called the Stone of Scone. How rediculous.

It's called the Stone of Destiny. Much different.

Boy Wonder is highlighting the myth/fact that A)there are probably several copies floating about and B) if it is such an important religious artifact and essential to a succesful coronation, there would be no way on God's Earth that it would be kept in a public place.

11

Masque,

05/07/2007 10:23:25

Google The Westminster Stone Theory for a good overview of the truth ... in various forms!

12

TimW1234,

I willl do further investigation to see whether this "purported" Stone of Scone, aka Jacob's Pillow, Stone of Destiny, Lia Fail, is the real thing or not.

And IF I am mistaken I will most readily sit corrected and defer to my more diligent fellow-commentators.

I am EVER your most humble and obedient servant.

God's Own Island 05/07/2007 12:22:10

How you getting on with that investigation Timothy?

Angus Mor

THe investigation is ongoing. Thanks for your concern.

15

Guthrie,

Roy- its all very well looking at things that way, but really they should be digging. Hopefully they'll find some interesting things and people will cough up the cash to check them out.

Timothy, if your seriously interested in the Stone of Destiny I reccomend reading up books and suchlike that reference primary sources. There is a great deal of fertiliser on the internet on this subject.
Having said that, what I have read suggests to me that the lump of sandstone in Edinburgh castle is likely not the real stone. What precisely happened to the real stone is still up in the air, although lots of people like to come up with outlandish suggestions.

16

Pilrig,

Livingston 05/07/2007 17:17:15

The real one - the Lia Fail - is allegedly a shiny black stone, possibly a meteorite, with heiroglyphics carved on it. Four people knew where it was kept, one being the late Wendy Wood.

17

Jock Tamson,

Scotland, Caledonia, Alba 05/07/2007 19:43:43

All they have to do is a Gil Grissom on the stone in Edinburgh Castle and compare the "DNA" with the Scone local sandstone.

If they have done it before, why have the results not been published under the Freedom of Information Act?

Just do it and let us all know.

The History of Princess Scota (ESI 1999)
Irish history records the story about Scota, the daughter of Pharaoh of Egypt who arrived in the southern part of Ireland between 4,000 and 3,500 years ago. She took on the trade route, sailing in search of the new world. She travelled to Spain from the Delta, by means of an Egyptian ship. She settled in the country of Kerry (south-western part of Ireland) and married Milesius and gave him eight sons.

Milesius, an invader from Spain, came to Ireland to conquest the ancient tribes and to take the kingdoms from Tuatha-De-Danaans. MacCuill, Mac Ceacht and Mac Greine fought in a long bloody battle about three miles from Tralee. Not only did the Danaan princes die in the battle of Tralee but also Scota the warrior Queen of the invaders was also killed. It seems that her sons Heremon and Heber were the only surviors of Milesius ruling family and that they divided the country between them. One took the north and the other the south. Then they inevitably quarrelled and Heber was slain.

Scota is buried on the sloped mountains in view of Tralee Bay at a place called Glenscoheen (Scota's Glenn). Irish archaeologists have not yet carried out any investigation on the site, which consists of woodland and natural rocks. The Ordnance Survey of Ireland has shown the actual location of the burial of Scota.

The above relates to the written tradition but what of oral tradition?

The grave of Scota still remains, and has been pointed out from age to age by unlettered country folk, who knew nothing about written records and whose orally transmitted knowledge is their tithe of evidence to the great events of long past ages. The grave lies between Slieve Mis and the sea at Glenscoheen, in the townland of Clahane, in the parish of Annagh and the borony of Troughanacmy.

Fas the wife of Un also died in Kerry in the valley of Gleann Faisi, now called Glenafaish. Donn and his companions were shipwrecked in Ke

ANNOUNCEMENT
Ian and his writers wish to enjoy the glorious weather we are having here in the West Highlands.

Forbye! Infinity Films of Vancouver are filming Ian’s book THE TAKING OF THE STONE OF DESTINY. This is taking up a great deal of his time involving trips to Glasgow where the film is being shot around the University. Have a look at Kelvin Way and you will see what’s involved.

The film will be premiered some time next year with an all star cast under the title STONE OF DESTINY. Charles Martin Smith the Hollywood actor and director has written the screenplay which is a delight. He also directs.

If anyone knows of a better exit line for a man in his eighties than to have a film made about his youth Ian would like to hear it. Ian thinks it beats ‘avizandum’.

There will be no issues of this blog until further notice.

Oh dear another comment removed from hen broon, it seems that others can swear but not hen broon, what a precious wee bunch you are in the Unionist gang hut. Your censors do you no favours at all.
Of course you will be able to cite your source for your assertion that there was no Scota?
I seem to remeber you saying the same about God and Jesus.
And the term Scots came from ?
I wonder if this post will get left up Ali?

Forgot to ask security man, why does this story have any thing to do with the SNP?
Do you know where the stone is?
Do you know what the stone was made of?
Do you know what the present stone is made of?
Do you know that Longshanks got the original stone?
Do you know why the Declaration of Arbroath says this? Most Holy Father and Lord, we know and from the chronicles and books of the ancients we find that among other famous nations our own, the Scots, has been graced with widespread renown. They journeyed from Greater Scythia by way of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Pillars of Hercules, and dwelt for a long course of time in Spain among the most savage tribes, but nowhere could they be subdued by any race, however barbarous. Thence they came, twelve hundred years after the people of Israel crossed the Red Sea, to their home in the west where they still live today. The Britons they first drove out, the Picts they utterly destroyed, and, even though very often assailed by the Norwegians, the Danes and the English, they took possession of that home with many victories and untold efforts; and, as the historians of old time bear witness, they have held it free of all bondage ever since. In their kingdom there have reigned one hundred and thirteen kings of their own royal stock, the line unbroken by a single foreigner.

Oh please great and wise one enlighten we who are not worthy.

ALBA GU BRATH.
